The ECFF opening meeting was held on the 13th October of 2003 in Athens.

The focus of the Center is to conduct research on issues relevant to wildfires, such as fires in forest-urban mixed zone (suburban forests), use of chemical substances in forest firefighting, personal protective equipment and health protection measures against wildfires. Both the objectives and the activities of the Center are aligned with the objectives and priorities of the Council of Europe and the Open Partial Agreement, such as the protection of vulnerable groups of population against disasters related to wildfires.
